Hand-painted 1:64 scale painter figures standing on the palm of a hand, showing how small they are

1:87, 1:64 or 1:12? How to Pick the Right Miniature Scale

Hi, it's Annie! 😊

The question I get asked more than any other is: "Which scale do I need?" Totally fair. Scale names look like maths homework, and ordering the wrong size is the most disappointing thing that can happen when a tiny parcel finally arrives. So here's my simple guide, from someone who spends most of her days with a very small paintbrush.

What does "1:64" actually mean?

The number tells you how many times smaller the miniature is than the real thing. A 1:64 figure is 64 times smaller than a real person. The bigger the second number, the tinier the miniature.

A quick way to picture it, using an average adult:

  • 1:87 (HO scale): about 2 cm tall
  • 1:64 (S scale): about 2.8 cm tall
  • 1:24: about 7 cm tall
  • 1:12: about 15 cm tall
  • 1:6: about 30 cm tall, the size of a Barbie-type doll

1:87 HO scale: for model railways

HO is the most popular model railway scale in the world, and it's especially loved in Germany and the rest of Europe. If you have an HO train layout, this is your scale. These are the smallest figures I paint, and honestly the most satisfying. Faces, shoelaces and tiny backpack straps all get their own colour.

1:64: for Hot Wheels, diecast cars and dioramas

1:64 is the scale most diecast car collectors use, so these figures are perfect next to your favourite toy cars. They're also great for S scale railways and little desk dioramas. A mechanic under a car or a couple at a café table can turn a shelf of cars into a whole story.

1:24 and 1:18: for bigger diecast garages

If your cars are the larger, heavier kind, you'll want 1:24 or 1:18 figures. They're big enough to show real expressions, which makes them great for garage displays.

1:12: the classic dollhouse scale

1:12 is the traditional dollhouse and room box scale. This is where all the little everyday things live: coffee cups, food, plants, books and pets. Small details like these are what make a room feel lived in.

1:6: for fashion dolls and action figures

1:6 fits Barbie-size dolls and most action figures. Think laptops, drinks, handbags and dogs for your doll scenes.

Still not sure?

Here are my three quick tips:

  1. Measure something you already own. A car, a doll or a train is the best guide.
  2. Check the height in the listing. I add the real height of each figure in the description so you can compare.
  3. Just ask me! Send a message with a photo of your scene and I'll happily tell you which scale will fit.

Happy building! 🇸🇪
